Well if you buy the newest version it could be about $600 but if you get what I have, 5.0 Elements, it cost me about $80. It does alot of amazing things, all the photo editing that you could want. Text. There are so many options I couldn't begin to tell you. Photoshop is amazing :)

It really depends on what you need. If you just need some basic photo editing - remove red eye, crop, a few nifty effects and such, then go for the Photoshop Elements series and simply get the newest one there is.
But if you want to get into serious, hardcore digital photo manipulation, digital painting and whatnot, then go for the full Photoshop CS.
Elements is very cheap and probably won't run you more than $100. The full-featured CS, however, is very expensive - several hundred dollars. You might be able to search the web (eBay or amazon.com) and find a used one cheaper than buying new. You can also try finding older versions of Photoshop (before it became CS), but I wouldn't really recommend going any lower than Photoshop 7.0.

I am a regular photoshop user. Some times you can get OLD versions of Photoshop on the eBay because people moved up to the newer versions. I think anything above photoshop 7 is good. Starting from Photo shop 8, Adobe started calling it CS (creative suite). So PS 8 = CS / PS9 = CS2 / PS10 = CS3
Some people are saying that CS2 and CS3 are just too much of a memory hog. I use CS (PS8).
===
Also, PS is an very old program. It grew slowly and the menu system is very confusing. The second reason why it is confusing is that PS is really 2 program in one (1) photo editing (b) graphic image creation.
If you are learning PS for photo editing, be careful when you go buy books and such. Often it is geared towards the graphic artists. Only recently with so many people getting a digital camera are they (authors) creating photographer's books.
I failed few time trying to learn PS (see above). I only GOT IT once somebody showed me the basics (of photo editing). It is my recommendation that you go seek tutorial VIDEO tapes. It is sort of like Video Professor (see it /do it).

The only thing I know of that helps is practice. Can you practice at home as well as at school? Or at the library?
Good luck - it's not fun to be behind, but you'll get the hang of it - and be happy for it later. (:

If you want to explore the world of Adobe Photoshop without spending the big money for the full product, get Photoshop Elements 5.0. It is a tremendously powerful program and it only sells for $99.00. You can get it at http://www.adobe.com or any of the usual places you buy software.
You can use it practically right out of the box with the "Quick Fix" option and then you can advance into the full program, learning TONS about the Photoshop world as you go. Frankly, I think neither you nor I would ever explore the full capabilities of Photoshop Elements 5.0. If you ever DO think you are ready for more, you will already know much of what you will need to know about "real" Photoshop. They'll undoubtedly have a new and improved version by then. Since Nikon just came out with a totally new image editting package, Adobe will have to step up to the plate.
Just go here http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshope… and click "Download Now" for a 30-day free trial.

That would greatly depend on what you wanted it for. If you are in a graphics field you would want the most up-to-date version available. Adobe has a free 30-day trial of the newest version (CS3) on their site: www.adobe.com. if you just want to learn, try any of the versions, Elements is good. Also, if you are a student, you can register at www.academicsuperstore.com. They have special discounted rates on many different computer programs and supplies. You do have to provide proof of student status to get the discount, though. Hope this helps!
